web designer + front-end developer
My simple tool for seeing how fonts look when combined together. Currently it uses just fonts from the Google Font Directory and a handful of common system fonts.
A very simple script that is meant to implement ligatures on the web.
I found your Combinator via a recent article on Smashing Magazine. It’s a fabulous idea and could be very useful. However, I must be really stupid because I cannot find a way to make the fonts change! What am I missing? I can change the copy and the font size but so far I can’t make any fonts change. Thanks.
Sheila,
First off – you are not stupid! Let me ask one question – what browser are you using? I’ve only really tested it in Safari (Mac), and it will work in Firefox 3.6+ (again, Mac). It also works in Chrome (Mac).
My line of thinking was 1. it was a hobby project and 2. I made it most immediately useful to me. I use Safari, so that’s what I built it to. It uses a few HTML5 elements, but the font-changing mechanism should still fire. It’s a simple JavaScript that I don’t think should give any browsers any issues.
Please let me know!
Hi Chip. Thanks for the combinator. I’m also using it and I also found a bug or two. I’m on Chrome/Win 7. I was hoping you wouldn’t mind if I mashed it up and made my own version? I have an idea for something and would like to adapt your JS code. I’m happy to give you credit/backlink but I’m really looking for something a bit more feature-laden and with something else as well.
Mayur,
First off – regarding Chrome/Win 7 – what kind of bug are you running into? I have to confess that the font combinator is a bit of a hobby project, so I’ve not been as rigorous with browser testing as I would normally be.
Second – if you want to take the JavaScript and mash it up – go for it! It’s not terribly complex. Just out of curiosity, what kind of features are you trying to accomplish?
Love this!
